How to Verify Remittance Rates in the UAE: What to Check
A consumer guide to verifying remittance rates in the UAE — what the market rate is, what to check, and how to avoid paying more than you should.
Understanding how to check and verify remittance rates is one of the most practical things a UAE expat can learn. Here is what to look for.
The market rate
The market rate (sometimes called the interbank rate or market rate) is the midpoint between the buy and sell rates in the wholesale foreign exchange market. It is not the rate most senders will receive — providers add a margin on top of this rate. You can check the current market rate for AED to your destination currency on financial reference sites or through your phone's search engine.
Steps to verify a remittance rate
- Before you transfer, look up the current market rate AED/[currency] rate as a reference.
- Get the exact rate and fee from your chosen provider (app, branch, or website) for your specific transfer amount.
- Calculate the effective margin: compare the rate you are being offered to the market rate.
- Calculate or request the final recipient amount in the destination currency.
- If time permits, compare the rate from at least two providers before committing.
Flat fees vs. rate margins
Some providers advertise "no fee" transfers but include their margin entirely in the exchange rate. Others charge a visible flat fee with a rate closer to market rate. Always focus on the final recipient amount, not just the advertised fee — this gives you the true total cost of the transfer.
