Exchange Rate Spreads Explained: What UAE Expats Pay
A clear explanation of exchange rate spreads and how they affect the cost of sending money from the UAE.
Exchange rate spreads are one of the main ways that money transfer providers make money — and understanding them can help UAE expats make more informed decisions about where to send from.
What is an exchange rate spread?
An exchange rate spread is the difference between the mid-market (interbank) rate and the rate a provider offers you. If the mid-market AED/INR rate is 23.00 and a provider offers you 22.60, the spread is 0.40 INR per AED, or approximately 1.7% of the transfer value.
Providers set their own spreads and they vary by corridor, transfer amount, payment method, and time of day. A provider that advertises "no fee" may still embed a significant margin in the exchange rate.
How to compare effective cost
The simplest way to compare the true cost of a transfer is to focus on the recipient amount — the amount in the destination currency that the recipient will actually receive. For the same AED amount sent, the provider offering the highest recipient amount has the lowest total cost (accounting for both the exchange rate spread and any fees).
AED/INR and AED/PKR context
For UAE to India (AED/INR), the AED is not pegged to INR. The rate can move based on India's economic conditions, RBI policy, and global USD/INR movements (since AED is pegged to USD at 3.6725).
For UAE to Pakistan (AED/PKR), because AED is pegged to USD, the AED/PKR rate closely tracks the USD/PKR rate in Pakistan's interbank market.
